The court is pleased to announce that Ms. Veronica Ramirez has been selected as its new Chief Probation Officer.  Ms. Ramirez will be joining the Eastern District of Louisiana starting December 10, 2018.  She is currently serving as the Deputy Chief United States Probation Officer for the Northern District of California. Ms. Ramirez has been the Deputy Chief for the Northern District of California Probation Office since November 2017 with additional service as the Assistant Deputy Chief Probation Officer from June 2015.  As part of her community involvement in the Bay Area, Ms. Ramirez participated in San Francisco's Project Homeless Connect where wrap-around services are provided to the Bay Area Community.   From 2005 through June 2015, Ms. Ramirez served in the District of Colorado Probation and Pretrial Services Office as a Supervision Officer, Special Offender Specialist and Supervising United States Probation Officer.  During her time in the Denver community, she was an adjunct criminal justice instructor at the Community College of Denver, served as a member of the Community College of Denver Criminal Justice Department Advisory Board, and was a mentor with a nonprofit organization, Denver Kids.  She was also a member of the Honorable Wiley Y. Daniel's “Dream Team”, a distinguished group of criminal justice professionals committed to educating and advocating for at risk youth regarding the importance of education and career opportunities in the criminal justice system.   Ms. Ramirez began her federal service in Texas where she worked in both the Southern District of Texas Probation and Pretrial Services Office and the Western District of Texas Probation Office.  She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree, with honors, from the University of Texas at Austin in Speech Communication and her Master of Science Degree from Texas A&M International University in Criminal Justice with a minor in Political Science.

The Judicial Conference Advisory Committees on Appellate, Bankruptcy, Civil and Evidence Rules have proposed amendments to their respective rules, have asked that they be circulated to the bench, bar, and public for comment. Appellate Rules:  35, and 40 Bankruptcy Rules: 2002, 2004, and 8012 Civil Rules: 30 Rules of Evidence: 404 The proposed amendments and the advisory committees’ reports explaining the proposed changes are posted on the Judiciary’s website. The information is posted in a printable format for those who prefer hard-copy documents. The public comment period closes on February 15, 2019.

With the elevation today of the Honorable Kurt D. Engelhardt to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the Honorable Nannette Jolivette Brown has begun her seven-year term as the Chief Judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Judge Jolivette Brown is the first African American female district court judge appointed to a federal court in Louisiana and is the first African American judge to serve as Chief Judge in the Eastern District of Louisiana.

Effective May 1, 2018, the Clerk will begin electronic filing and distribution of Statement of Reasons for sentencing in criminal cases.   Attorneys of record who have been granted access will enter their CM/ECF Filer login and password to authenticate that the attorney is an authorized party in order to view the document, the same as the procedure used for electronic disclosure of the Presentence Investigation Report.   The Statement of Reasons filed in a sealed case will be distributed manually.
