On May 27, 2021, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana celebrated Asian American Pacific Islander History Month by hosting a program entitled, “The Asian American Experience: From Korematsu to Covid-19.”  The program featured panelists, Dr. Karen Korematsu, founder of The Fred Korematsu Institute and daughter of the late civil rights icon, Fred Korematsu; the Honorable Cyndi Nguyen, New Orleans City Councilwoman, District E; David Courcelle, Jefferson Parish Deputy Parish Attorney; and Dr. Jean Bing Simpson, LSU psychiatrist.  Mr. Courcelle moderated the event, and the Honorable Nannette Jolivette Brown, Chief U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Louisiana, gave opening and closing remarks.  The panelists gave varied legal, historical, and social perspectives on the Asian American experience, and provided valuable insight into what it meant to be an Asian American in times past and what it means to be an Asian American in our country today.

The Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana has issued COVID-19 General Order No. 21-7, extending COVID-19 General Order No. 21-3, COVID-19 General Order No. 20-14, COVID-19 General Order No. 20-11, COVID-19 General Order No. 20-8 and COVID-19 General Order No. 20-4 for an additional ninety days or until September 12, 2021. On May 4th, 2021, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana held oath administrations in which 24 individuals were naturalized to become United States Citizens. The Honorable Nannette Jolivette Brown, Chief U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Louisiana, presided over the oath administrations and administered the Oath of Allegiance to the naturalization candidates. In taking the Oath, the naturalization candidates committed themselves to both the Constitution and Laws of the United States. The candidates hailed from across the globe, including Brazil, Burma, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Egypt, Honduras, Jordan, Russia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, and as a result, the administrations were truly a modern-day expression of America's diversified immigrant roots. The current term of office of United States Magistrate Judge Michael B. North at New Orleans, Louisiana, is due to expire on February 28, 2022. The United States District Court is required by law to establish a panel of citizens to consider the reappointment of a magistrate judge to a new eight year term. The court is currently assembling a Merit Selection Panel. The names of the panel members will be published.  The duties of a magistrate judge include the following: (1) conducting most preliminary proceedings in criminal cases; (2) trial and disposition of misdemeanor cases; (3) conducting various pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings on delegation from the judges of the district court; and (4) trial and disposition of civil cases upon consent of the parties. Comments from members of the bar and the public are invited as to whether the incumbent magistrate judge should be recommended by the panel for reappointment by the court and may be sent via email to Clerk@laed.uscourts.gov or mailed to Carol L. Considering recent recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the State of Louisiana, and the City of New Orleans, individuals who are fully vaccinated are not required to wear a mask to enter the Hale Boggs Federal Building or Courthouse; nor are fully vaccinated individuals required to distance 6 feet apart from other individuals while moving through the building. A person is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their final COVID-19 vaccine shot. View this PDF.
